Caddo is a name derived from “ka do hada’ cho”, a native Caddo word which means “real chief”. From the Caddo Tribe, this part of Bryan County was established long before Oklahoma became a state. The town traces its history from its earliest settlers who arrived during the 1800s.
As a tribute to its rich, historic culture, the Caddo Community Association (CCA) celebrates the Heritage Day on one Saturday of October. Starting off with a mini marathon, a 5k run, the Caddo Heritage Day proceeds with the opening ceremonies which includes a flag raising. The highlight of day is the parade where folks all over the town join in the merrymaking.
Last year, a collection of lovely vintage cars were featured on the road. There were also people in costumes, horseback riders, horse wagons, monster trucks, a fire truck, and police cars who joined the parade. The Buffalo Street was also showered with candies and sweet treats, much to the delight of the little kids who watched on the sidewalks.
Caddo’s Heritage is made possible by local volunteers. Through this event, you can feel that strong sense of community that is endearingly unique to small towns. Every third Saturday of October, CCA celebrates this event, just in time for the Fall Break weekend. The festivities are held amidst the vibrant fall foliage. It is also a time to celebrate the bountiful harvest season, so you can expect scarecrows, pumpkins, and other autumn goodies.
In the years past the theme have included, “Rock the World, Be Happy”, with a bit of ‘50s vintage flair – think Grease, poodle skirts, and vinyl records. It is also a way to honor the town’s senior citizens.
More and more activities are lined up for this year’s Heritage Day. There’s also the annual search for Little Mr. and Little Miss Caddo, Prettiest Baby Contest, and recognitions for the coolest parade entries.
Watch out for hilarious old-fashioned games such as the sack race, cake walk, egg toss, and other surprise activities.
